Manitoba Sandhill Crane Hunting Trips

For those looking to spice up your waterfowling desires, look no further than hunting sandhill cranes. Not only are these birds the best waterfowl to hit the dinner table, but these extremely wary birds are fantastic to shoot over decoys. Our window of opportunity to chase these birds is short as they congregate in late August, with the majority leaving our area by mid-September. For that reason, there are very few shot once the US waterfowl season opens in late September. With a season beginning Sept. 1, we greet these birds with our monster 42-foot, custom-made blind and Deception decoys, the best crane decoys on the market. If you are a waterfowler, it will not take you long to realize I understand waterfowl hunting.

With a five-bird limit per person, this solid number gives our groups the needed bird count to extend through most mornings to nail down a  group’s limit. In other words, this morning hunt isn’t over with in a matter of a short hour. And if we don’t succeed in the morning limit, we will pick up the slack on an afternoon hunt.

For days that we do limit out on a morning shoot, hunters have the opportunity to purchase a fishing license and take one of our boats to a nearby lake to throw a line for walleye and pike. This is also the time that our fall bear hunts are getting ramped up, and may be a great time to do a combination hunt for both sandhill cranes in the morning and black bear in the evenings. The time of year is great, as fall begins settling in and our fall seasons get their start.
